Ways For a Dog To Escape Your Fence

Ways For a Dog To Escape Your Fence

Here are possible ways for a dog to escape your home’s fence.

If you have a pet dog, you’ll want to make sure they stay safe at all times. Part of keeping your dog safe includes making sure they don’t escape your yard. To help keep your dog in the yard, homeowners will often install a fence, but it’s possible for dogs to escape from these fences in some situations. Here are possible ways for a dog to escape your home’s fence.

Jumping Over Your Fence

Some dogs have enough athleticism to jump over your yard’s fencing. This becomes even more of a possibility with larger dogs and shorter fences. A simple, but effective, fix for this problem is to raise your fence’s height so that it’s harder to scale. Make sure that there are no “launching pads” that dogs can use to jump your fencing more easily, whether it’s a dog house, a leftover box, or some other sort of platform.

Digging Under Your Fence

Not every dog is going to hop a fence; some dogs will instead try to dig underneath your fencing as an escape route. To address this possibility, you need to make sure that the space underneath your fencing doesn’t invite your dog to start digging.

For those who are getting new fences, it’s good to bury your fencing 6-12 inches in the ground. If your fencing is already installed, you can still address digging by adding plants along your fence’s perimeter. These plants should have thorns on them so that dogs won’t want to go through these plants while they’re digging.

Dogs Going Through Fences

Some dogs will opt to charge straight through your fencing. Bigger and stronger dogs will have a better chance of success with this method, and the chance of success increases if your fence is weakened.

That’s why you need to have a strong, fortified fence that can withstand the strength of your dog. You could add a barrier to the inside of your fencing, or make repairs to your existing fence boards. The stronger your fencing is, the harder it will be for your dog to charge through it.
